Asset 7

Ratnahang Subba, an energetic man with an infectious smile is the owner of the food truck Darjeeling MoMo who loves to  happily serve other with the Nepalese cuisine and help others in need.

Background

Ratna was born in Bhutan in the year 1983. His father  a good job in Bhutan, but because of some communal riots going on, he was forced to leave the motherland. Subba left for Nepal with his mother and two sisters later. It was not that easy to escape Bhutan in the day broad light. So, they escaped in the Night through woods. It was not an easy passage through the forest. They had nothing to eat and no any liquid to quench their thirst. It was the favor of God that he provided some good Samaritans and they lead his family members to a shelter and provided food.

What a devastating fact to hear that though they had everything in Bhutan, they had to forsake everything. They lost their land, home, and friends.

Finally, Ratna and his family made it to the refugee camp on the banks of Mai Stream in Eastern part of Nepal. They had to merely feed on the fishes of that stream as they were left with no other options. After a year, they were relocated to another camp. They stayed there for 19 years. They did not have proper housing. They had to hide their heads under the bamboo huts covered with plastic tarps. Ratna still remember those days when they used to lack of food and every essential element. Besides the want, they were dominated by the Nepalese community living around them. They were really disgraced.

His fresh start as a chef in Idaho

In the year 2012, after living as a refugee in Nepal for almost 2 decades, under the rehabilitation program of the US, Ratna and his family members arrived in Boise in the year 2012. Within three months of arriving in Boise, Ratna started working as a chef with the knowledge, experience, and expertise, he gained in Nepal working as a chef for around 7 years. He has his specialties in cooking dumplings, chowmein and kebab.

How did he come up with this food trucking business?

When he came to Idaho, Ratna worked at the MoMo Dumpling restaurant in Meridian. After working for a couple of years, Ratna  had to leave that job, as owners of that restaurant had to return Nepal because of the inevitable condition in Nepal. After that, he felt a need of own business. Thus, with the help of family members and EO (Enterpreneurs’ Organization), Ratna bought a food truck and has been in this business for around a decade. He is successful at all the events, and people have seen it as a proof.

Where can we find his food truck?

He is likely to be found in the following areas or events as he has high demands:                                    Glenn Ferry Event, Art in the park Event (Western US Event), Kuna Day, Heide Park, Saturday Market (Boise Downtown), World Village Event, Southern Food Truck Association, Green Acres Food Truck Park

Recognitions

Ratna has been awarded with first position in Glenn Fery Event, and have received numerous appreciations and commendations for the food and service he has been providing. Besides, he has provided food training at Boise weekly.

Future plans

As of now, Ratna wants to preach the gospel of God as he strongly believes that all his success and fame is all because of the Grace and Mercy of the almighty Lord Jesus Christ. Also, as he has compassionated heart, he donates in the charities time and again. He has strongly used his business as a medium to help others.

In a couple of years, Ratna wants to open a full fledged Nepaleses restaurant in Boise, Idaho as people are  continually encouraging him, and demanding for a restaurant. Furthermore, it’s also his dream to have hands of his family members on his business. Very soon we hope to see his family owned Nepalese restaurant in downtown.

Background

Ratna was born in Bhutan in the year 1983. His father served in the British army full service for almost 16 years and retired. Then, he came back to Bhutan, and worked as a District Member on board of council of Parliament. Because of some communal riots going on, his father was forced to leave the motherland. Thus the childhood of Ratna did not go well. Subba left for Nepal with his mother and two sisters later. It was not that easy to escape Bhutan in the day broad light. His food was greatly appreciated by all the customers. Once, in that restaurant, there was an event going on. He had a chance to give a speech. It was a wonderful time for him to get close to his customers. His customers dabbed him in the shoulders with thanksgiving and commendation. They said, “Ratna, not only your foods are delicious but your words are sweet as well. You are hospitable. Not only that, we find you very humbly, and wish you a bright future.”

These were really encouraging  and motivating words for him. This was the reason that after he was jobless, he felt a need of own business. He had a keen interest in opening own food restaurant, but it happened so that he was not financially stable. Thus, with the help of family members, Ratna bought a food truck and has been in this business for around a decade.
